History

Pen Ryn School is an independent school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, serving students from Pre-K3 through 8th grade. With a rich history and strong traditions, Pen Ryn continues to be a place where students learn, grow, and thrive.

Pen Ryn’s story begins in 1946, when grades one through eight from All Saints Episcopal School in Northeast Philadelphia relocated to a 100-acre estate along the Delaware River in Andalusia. The property, known as Pen Ryn, was donated by Charles Biddle, whose family had owned the land since the 18th century.

 

The estate, once visited by figures such as Benjamin Franklin and artist Benjamin West, provided a unique setting for learning. Students attended classes in rooms with fireplaces, studied beneath hand-painted ceilings, and experienced traditions that became part of the school’s identity.

As enrollment grew and the area developed, the school made the decision to relocate. In 1986, Pen Ryn moved to its current home in Fairless Hills, expanding its student body and entering a new phase of growth. While the location changed, the spirit of the school remained—reflected in the Pen Ryn Spirit, a symbol of both its history and community.

Today, Pen Ryn balances long-standing traditions with a forward-thinking approach to education.

 

Traditions have evolved over time. The 8th-grade graduation ceremony continues to be held at the original Pen Ryn mansion, connecting students to the school’s history, while events like the Upper School Halloween Sleepover carry forward a sense of community and fun.

 

At the same time, Pen Ryn continues to grow to meet the needs of its students. Expanded academic support services, including an academic support specialist and the Learning Center, provide additional pathways for students. The Innovation Lab offers hands-on opportunities in coding, fabrication, and design thinking.
