  Reading

   

  In sixth grade, students use HMH Into Literature to strengthen reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills through a variety of literary and informational texts. Through, literature circles, guided reading, and shared reading experiences, students deepen their understanding of text while developing independence as readers.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Read and analyze a wide range of literary and informational texts
  • Use evidence from text to support thinking and responses
  • Identify themes, central ideas, and supporting details
  • Analyze character development, plot, and structure
  • Compare and contrast texts across genres
  • Strengthen comprehension through literature circles and discussions
  • Build vocabulary through context and academic reading
  • Improve listening comprehension through discussion and oral reading

   

  Writing

   

  Sixth grade writing focuses on developing clear, purposeful, and well-structured communication across multiple genres. Students follow the writing process and use mentor texts to guide and strengthen their writing style and technique.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Write personal narrative, informative, and persuasive pieces
  • Develop compare/contrast, response to literature, and research writing
  • Organize writing using clear introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions
  • Support ideas with evidence and elaboration
  • Revise and edit for grammar, clarity, and style
  • Strengthen sentence structure and writing conventions
  • Complete research and interdisciplinary writing projects
  • Participate in and prepare for a formal class debate, using evidence-based arguments and persuasive speaking skills
  • Present ideas through oral and visual presentations

  Honors Math (Big Ideas Math – Advanced 2)

  Sixth grade mathematics builds a strong foundation for pre-algebra and higher-level reasoning. Students develop fluency with number relationships while applying problem-solving strategies to real-world and abstract contexts.

   

  Grade 6 On-Level Math

   

  Students focus on building conceptual understanding and procedural fluency while strengthening problem-solving skills.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Understand ratios, fractions, decimals, and percents and their relationships
  • Apply operations with fractions and decimals to real-world problems
  • Develop fluency with integer operations
  • Solve multi-step word problems using multiple strategies
  • Strengthen proportional reasoning
  • Explore introductory algebra concepts and expressions
  • Understand and apply concepts of area, surface area, and volume

  Honors Math (Big Ideas Math – Advanced 2)

   

  Students in Honors Math engage in an accelerated curriculum that extends grade-level concepts with greater depth, rigor, and complexity.

   

  Students in this course:

   

  • Master proportional reasoning, ratios, and percent applications
  • Work fluently with rational numbers, including integers and fractions
  • Solve complex multi-step and multi-concept problems
  • Strengthen algebraic thinking through expressions and equations
  • Analyze and interpret data using advanced representations
  • Apply geometric concepts including area, surface area, and volume in depth
  • Use precise mathematical reasoning to justify solutions

• Science

  Sixth grade science uses an inquiry-based physical science curriculum that encourages students to observe, investigate, and analyze the world around them. Students engage in hands-on labs and scientific modeling while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Physical and chemical changes
  • Forces and motion
  • Energy and energy transfer
  • Waves, including light and sound
  • Engineering design and problem-solving processes

   

  Students are encouraged to ask questions, conduct investigations, and communicate findings through written and verbal explanations.

• Social Studies

  Sixth grade social studies uses the McGraw Hill curriculum to develop students’ understanding of world regions, geography, culture, and global connections. Students strengthen research skills while learning to analyze informational text and current events.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Explore world geography and the characteristics of global regions
  • Study ancient civilizations and early human societies
  • Analyze how geography influences culture and development
  • Use maps, charts, and geographic tools to interpret information
  • Read and evaluate informational texts and current events
  • Develop research skills using credible sources
  • Present findings through written, oral, and visual projects

   

  Students build global awareness while strengthening critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills.

• Experiences & Traditions

  Sixth grade offers students increased opportunities for leadership, responsibility, and participation in school life. Athletics also become an important part of student life, with opportunities to participate in interscholastic sports such as soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

   

  A culminating experience of the year is the Travel Fair, which serves as a celebration and extension of the past two years of social studies learning. Each student is assigned a country to research in depth, exploring its geography, culture, history, and global significance. Students then present their findings to families and the school community, sharing their learning through engaging displays and presentations.

   

  Sixth grade is a year of transition, growth, and discovery. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, embrace new challenges, and develop the skills and confidence needed for success in middle school and beyond.
