• Language Arts

  Reading

   

  Seventh grade Language Arts uses HMH Into Literature to engage students in complex texts that explore themes of identity, perspective, and prejudice. Students read a variety of literary genres and informational texts while developing critical thinking and communication skills.

   

  Reading instruction includes independent reading, whole-class novel studies, and literature circles that encourage discussion, analysis, and interpretation.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Read and analyze literary and informational texts across multiple genres
  • Explore themes such as identity, perspective, and social issues
  • Participate in literature circles, discussions, and book clubs
  • Analyze drama, short story, poetry, nonfiction, and folktales
  • Support ideas with textual evidence
  • Make inferences and draw conclusions
  • Strengthen vocabulary through context and academic reading
  • Respond to literature through writing, projects, and presentations

   

  Writing

   

  Seventh grade writing emphasizes the development of strong, independent writers who can communicate effectively across multiple genres. Students follow the full writing process and are expected to revise and refine their work to produce polished, publishable pieces.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Write narrative, informative, expository, persuasive, and research-based pieces
  • Write compare/contrast, response to literature, creative writing, and news-style writing
  • Develop clear organization with strong introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions
  • Support ideas with evidence and elaboration
  • Revise and edit for clarity, grammar, and style across multiple drafts
  • Strengthen sentence structure and writing conventions
  • Complete research and interdisciplinary writing projects
  • Present ideas through oral and visual presentations

• Mathematics

  Math (Big Ideas Math – Course 2)

  Honors Math (Big Ideas Math – Algebra 1)

  Seventh grade mathematics strengthens students’ problem-solving skills and prepares them for higher-level algebraic thinking. Students develop fluency with rational numbers while applying mathematical reasoning to complex problems.

   

  On-Level Math (Course 2)

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Work fluently with rational numbers, including fractions, decimals, and integers
  • Solve multi-step equations and inequalities
  • Understand ratios, proportions, and percent applications
  • Explore geometric concepts including area, surface area, and volume
  • Analyze and interpret data using statistics and probability
  • Strengthen algebraic thinking and problem-solving strategies
  • Apply math to real-world situations and explain reasoning

   

  Honors Math (Algebra 1)

   

  Students in Honors Math engage in an accelerated Algebra 1 curriculum that emphasizes abstract reasoning and advanced problem-solving.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Solve and graph linear equations and inequalities
  • Work with systems of equations
  • Analyze functions and relationships
  • Apply polynomial operations and factoring strategies
  • Strengthen algebraic reasoning and mathematical modeling
  • Interpret and analyze real-world data using algebraic methods

• Science (Life Science)

  Seventh grade science focuses on life science through inquiry-based learning, hands-on labs, and scientific investigation. Students are encouraged to think critically, analyze data, and apply the scientific method across all units.

   

  Students explore:

   

  • Cell structure, function, and processes
  • Microbiology and microscopic organisms
  • Genetics and heredity
  • Evolution and natural selection
  • Human body systems, including circulatory and muscular-skeletal systems
  • Scientific inquiry through experiments, observation, and analysis

   

  Students communicate their understanding through labs, written explanations, and presentations.

• Social Studies

  Seventh grade social studies focuses on the development of the United States from early settlement through modern history. Students analyze primary and secondary sources while building skills in reading, note-taking, and historical thinking.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Analyze primary and secondary sources to understand historical events
  • Develop historical thinking, reading, and note-taking skills
  • Study key eras in U.S. history, including early settlement, the 13 Colonies, and the American Revolution
  • Examine the growth of the nation, including westward expansion and early government
  • Explore major events such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Industrial Revolution
  • Understand the impact of urbanization, labor movements, and major 20th-century events including World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II

   

  Students engage in video clips, art, map work and document analysis to deepen their understanding of historical events and turning points in U.S. history.

• Culminating Experiences

  Seventh grade includes a variety of field trips and experiential learning opportunities that connect classroom learning to real-world contexts. These experiences may include visits to historical sites, museums, and theatrical performances that enhance understanding of curriculum topics.

   

  Students also participate in a Probability Carnival at the end of the year, where they design and create their own games, calculate probabilities, and apply mathematical reasoning in a hands-on setting. Fifth and sixth grade students are invited to attend and play the games, providing seventh graders with an opportunity to demonstrate learning through leadership, creativity, and collaboration.

   

  Students also begin to focus more intentionally on future academic pathways. Pen Ryn hosts a High School Night to help families and students prepare for the transition to high school and explore future academic opportunities.
