• Language Arts

  Reading

   

  Using HMH Into Reading, second grade students continue to strengthen foundational reading skills while developing greater independence, fluency, and comprehension. Through a variety of literary and informational texts, students learn to think critically, communicate their ideas, and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Read and analyze a variety of literary and informational texts
  • Retell stories and summarize key details
  • Describe characters, settings, and plot development
  • Identify the main idea and supporting details in texts
  • Ask and answer questions using evidence from the text
  • Make inferences and draw conclusions based on what they read
  • Compare and contrast characters, events, topics, and texts
  • Use text features to locate and understand information
  • Expand academic and content-area vocabulary through reading and discussion

   

  Daily word study and phonics instruction help students become more accurate and fluent readers by learning to:

   

  • Apply grade-level phonics patterns to decode unfamiliar words
  • Read and spell words with common vowel teams and spelling patterns
  • Decode multisyllabic words using a variety of strategies
  • Recognize and use high-frequency words automatically
  • Build reading fluency through repeated practice and connected text reading
  • Use context and word structure to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words

   

  Writing

   

  Second grade students develop their writing skills through a variety of authentic writing experiences that connect reading, thinking, and communication. Students learn to organize their ideas, elaborate with details, and write for different purposes and audiences.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Write narratives that include a clear sequence of events and descriptive details
  • Write informative pieces that introduce and explain a topic
  • Write opinion pieces that support ideas with reasons and evidence
  • Plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish their writing
  • Organize ideas into paragraphs with supporting details
  • Strengthen sentence structure and word choice
  • Apply grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling conventions
  • Respond to texts through written reflection and analysis
  • Develop cursive handwriting skills with correct letter formation and legibility

   

  Students are encouraged to view themselves as thoughtful readers and capable writers, building the skills and confidence needed for future academic success.

• Mathematics

  Using Big Ideas Math: Math & You, second grade students deepen their understanding of numbers and operations while strengthening problem-solving and mathematical reasoning skills.

   

  Through hands-on exploration, collaborative discussions, real-world applications, and the use of manipulatives, students develop confidence and flexibility as mathematicians.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Develop a strong understanding of place value and number relationships
  • Add and subtract within 1,000 using a variety of strategies
  • Solve one- and two-step real-world mathematical problems
  • Build foundations for multiplication through equal groups, arrays, and repeated addition
  • Count, compare, and represent larger numbers
  • Work with money and apply mathematical concepts to everyday situations
  • Tell and write time using analog and digital clocks
  • Measure and compare length using standard units
  • Explore fractions as equal parts of a whole
  • Identify, describe, compare, and classify two- and three-dimensional shapes
  • Collect, organize, represent, and interpret data
  • Explain and justify mathematical thinking using models, drawings, equations, and written responses

   

  Students are encouraged to explore multiple problem-solving strategies, communicate their reasoning, and persevere through challenging tasks, building a strong foundation for future mathematical success.

• Science

  Second-grade science continues to emphasize hands-on discovery and real-world connections.

   

  • Life science: explore animal classifications, habitats, and food chains

  • Physical science: investigate forms of energy, motion, pushes and pulls

• Social Studies

  With Studies Weekly, second graders learn more about their world and how communities work.

   

  • Explore roles in a community, local government, and basic economics
    
    
  • Use maps and globes to understand geography and location
    
    
  • Study important national symbols, landmarks, and historical figures
    
    
  • Discuss cultural traditions and how people around the world live
    
    
  • Continue building citizenship skills like respect, fairness, and responsibility
    
    

  Weekly lessons are interactive and discussion-based, helping students connect big ideas to their own lives.

• Culminating Experiences

  During Career Month, parents are invited to share their careers and the tools of their trade with the class. The annual Mother’s Day Breakfast is one of the highlights of second grade and a favorite family event. Moms are pampered as Dads serve breakfast and children share gifts, songs, and a year of second-grade memories.
