A Joyful Start to Lifelong Learning

Pen Ryn’s full-day kindergarten program is designed to help each child grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Our small class sizes and individualized attention allow students to reach their full potential and begin developing into independent thinkers. In our classrooms, well-rounded learners engage in hands-on activities, small groups, and cooperative projects that encourage them to explore new ideas and make meaningful connections.
 
Every day in kindergarten is a blend of strong academics and playful discovery. Our experienced teachers create a classroom environment that nurtures curiosity and builds confidence, ensuring each child feels excited to share their day’s adventures at home.

  • Language Arts

    Reading
     
    Kindergarten students develop foundational literacy skills through engaging, research-based instruction using HMH Into Reading. Through a combination of read-alouds, shared reading, and hands-on literacy experiences, students build comprehension, vocabulary, and a love of reading. Students learn to:
     
    • Listen to and discuss a variety of literary and informational texts
    • Retell stories and identify key details
    • Build vocabulary through rich conversations and text experiences
    • Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding
    • Make connections between texts and their own experiences
     
    Daily phonological awareness and phonics instruction help students become confident readers by learning to:
     
    • Recognize and name uppercase and lowercase letters
    • Identify and produce letter sounds
    • Blend, segment, and manipulate sounds in spoken words
    • Decode and read simple words and sentences
    • Read and write high-frequency words
     
    Writing
     
    Kindergarten students learn that writing is a way to communicate ideas, stories, and information. Through drawing, dictating, and writing, students develop confidence as writers while strengthening the connection between reading and writing. Students learn to:
     
    • Express ideas through pictures, labels, words, and sentences
    • Use phonics knowledge to spell words phonetically
    • Write about personal experiences, opinions, and information
    • Participate in shared and independent writing activities
    • Develop handwriting, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation skills
    • Share their writing with classmates and teachers

  • Mathematics

    Using Big Ideas Math: Math & You, kindergarten students develop a strong foundation in mathematical thinking through hands-on exploration, problem-solving, and meaningful real-world connections. Through interactive lessons, math discussions, games, and the use of manipulatives, students build confidence as mathematicians and learn to:
     
    • Count, represent, and compare numbers
    • Recognize, write, and work with numbers within 20
    • Develop an understanding of addition and subtraction
    • Identify, describe, and sort two- and three-dimensional shapes
    • Explore measurement concepts such as length, weight, and capacity
    • Recognize, create, and extend patterns
    • Collect, organize, and interpret simple data
    • Explain their mathematical thinking using words, pictures, and models
     
    Students are encouraged to explore multiple strategies, collaborate with peers, and develop perseverance as they solve problems, creating a strong foundation for future mathematical learning.
     

  • Science

    Science in kindergarten is all about sparking curiosity. Through observations, experiments, and outdoor exploration, students investigate:
     
    • Living and nonliving things, and what plants and animals need

    • The five senses and our bodies

    • Weather and the changing seasons

    • Properties like sink/float and hard/soft

  • Social Studies

    Social studies in kindergarten follows Pennsylvania’s early learning standards, helping students learn about:
     
    • Families, communities, and what it means to be a good citizen

    • Rules, fairness, sharing, and working together

    • Holidays, traditions, and appreciating differences

     
    Classroom discussions, stories, and special activities help make these concepts real and relatable.

  • Special Events and Traditions

    Beyond the classroom, kindergartners take part in Pen Ryn traditions that make the year memorable. Academic field trips, Grandparents’ Day, class parties, kindergarten graduation, and assemblies give students chances to build friendships, celebrate learning, and share joyful moments with family.
