• Language Arts

  Reading

   

  Using HMH Into Reading, fourth grade students deepen their comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical thinking skills through a wide range of literary and informational texts. Literature circles, discussions, and collaborative work support differentiated instruction and foster a lifelong love of reading.

   

  Students develop the ability to think critically, support ideas with textual evidence, and communicate effectively across genres.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Read and analyze complex literary and informational texts
  • Determine themes, main ideas, and supporting details
  • Analyze characters, settings, events, and points of view
  • Summarize texts and explain ideas using evidence
  • Make inferences and draw conclusions based on text evidence

  Writing

   

  Fourth grade writers continue to develop independence, voice, and clarity as they write across multiple genres.

   

  Students learn to:

  • Write informative/explanatory texts using facts and organization
  • Write opinion pieces supported by reasons and evidence
  • Plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish independently and collaboratively
  • Strengthen paragraph organization, transitions, and sentence variety
  • Develop clear, engaging writing with increasing sophistication
  • Apply grammar, punctuation, and spelling conventions effectively
  • Respond to reading through written analysis and reflection
  • Develop fluent cursive handwriting and apply it in daily writing tasks

• Mathematics

  Using Big Ideas Math: Math & You, fourth grade students strengthen mathematical reasoning, fluency, and problem-solving skills through hands-on exploration, visual models, and real-world applications.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Develop fluency with multi-digit multiplication
  • Understand and apply long division strategies
  • Deepen understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions
  • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators
  • Develop an understanding of decimals and place value relationships
  • Solve multi-step word problems using a variety of strategies
  • Explore and apply concepts of area and perimeter
  • Interpret and create graphs and data displays
  • Use models, equations, and drawings to explain thinking
  • Apply mathematical reasoning to real-world situations

   

  Students are encouraged to collaborate, persevere through challenging problems, and clearly explain their mathematical thinking.

• Science

  Fourth grade science is a hands-on, inquiry-based program where students build scientific understanding through observation, experimentation, and analysis. Students are encouraged to ask questions, form hypotheses, and draw evidence-based conclusions.

   

  Students explore:

   

  • Life science: plant and animal cells, and classification of animals
  • Earth science: weather, oceans, and landforms, including systems and cycles
  • Physical science: energy, electrical circuits, and magnetism

   

  Students communicate their learning through discussions, experiments, and written explanations, strengthening both scientific thinking and communication skills.

• Social Studies

  Fourth grade social studies builds students’ understanding of the United States through geography, civics, and regional studies. Students develop map skills and learn how people, places, and systems are connected across the country.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Name and locate states and capitals of the United States
  • Examine and describe the characteristics of different U.S. regions
  • Develop geographic skills using maps, keys, and scales
  • Build understanding of culture, community, and regional diversity
  • Strengthen awareness of civic responsibility and cooperation

   

  Students engage in discussion, research, and technology-based activities to build global awareness and critical thinking skills.

• Culminating Experiences

  Fourth grade students participate in meaningful projects and learning experiences that connect subjects and strengthen independence. A highlight of the year is the State Fair Project, where each student is assigned a U.S. state to research and then present to their peers, sharing key information about geography, history, landmarks, and culture. Study skills such as organization, note-taking, and test preparation strategies are reinforced throughout the year.

   

  The fourth grade experience is challenging, engaging, and empowering. Students are encouraged to collaborate, communicate effectively, and take ownership of their learning as they prepare for a successful transition to upper grades.
