  Eighth grade Language Arts uses HMH Into Literature to engage students in complex literary and informational texts that explore themes of identity, conflict, and social injustice. Students analyze how authors develop ideas and respond to literature through discussion, writing, and presentations.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Analyze literature and informational texts across multiple genres
  • Explore themes such as conflict, identity, and social justice
  • Examine novels, drama, poetry, short stories, and nonfiction
  • Support analysis with textual evidence
  • Develop critical thinking through discussion and interpretation

  Writing

   

  Eighth grade writing emphasizes independence, refinement, and mastery of the writing process. Students produce multi-draft, publishable work across a range of genres.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Write narrative, informative, expository, persuasive, and research-based pieces
  • Develop compare/contrast, response to literature, creative, and news-style writing
  • Strengthen organization, voice, and clarity in writing
  • Support arguments and analysis with strong evidence
  • Revise and edit multiple drafts for publication quality
  • Follow the full writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing

  Math (Big Ideas Math – Course 3)

  Honors Math (Big Ideas Math – Geometry)

  Eighth grade mathematics focuses on preparing students for high school algebra and geometry through rigorous problem-solving, reasoning, and application.

   

  On-Level Math (Course 3)

  • Work with rational numbers, expressions, and equations
  • Develop fluency with functions and graphing

  Honors Math (Geometry)

   

  Students in Honors Math engage in an accelerated geometry curriculum focused on spatial reasoning and formal mathematical proof.

  • Apply theorems and postulates to solve problems
  • Develop formal reasoning and geometric proofs

  Eighth grade science is a comprehensive exploration of Earth Science, Chemistry, and Astronomy, with an emphasis on inquiry, experimentation, and engineering design.

   

  Students explore:

   

  • Tectonic plate theory, earthquakes, and Earth systems
  • Engineering design and problem-solving processes
  • Atomic theory and atomic bonding
  • Physical and chemical changes in matter
  • Sun-Earth-Moon system and space science
  • Solar system and astronomy concepts

   

  Students engage in hands-on labs, modeling, and investigations to develop scientific reasoning and analytical skills.

• Social Studies

  Eighth grade social studies focuses on the foundations of government, economics, and civic responsibility. Students examine how systems are created and how citizens participate in shaping society.

   

  Students learn to:

  • Study the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and early American government
  • Analyze the structure and function of the three branches of government
  • Explore budgeting, markets, money, and basic economic systems
  • Understand local, national, and international economics

  Students develop civic understanding and critical thinking skills through discussion, projects, and real-world applications of government and economics.

• Culminating Experiences

  Eighth grade is a leadership-focused year where students are expected to model responsibility and maturity across the school community. Students take on formal leadership roles, participate in student council, and help lead school-wide activities and events.

   

  Physical education and athletics play an important role in student life, with opportunities to participate in team sports such as soccer, cross-country, basketball, and volleyball. Athletic participation culminates in Blue and Gold Day, where eighth graders lead the school in a spirited day of friendly competition.

   

  The eighth grade year includes an overnight camping trip focused on team building and ropes course activities, where students strengthen communication, trust, and collaboration through hands-on challenges. Students also take a trip to New York City to see a Broadway play, providing a meaningful cultural experience that connects to their study of literature, storytelling, and the performing arts.

   

  In addition, eighth graders participate in a full class musical production, where every student plays an essential role in bringing the performance to life. Through rehearsals and performance, students build confidence, responsibility, and teamwork while contributing to a shared artistic experience.

  These opportunities help students develop resilience, leadership, and independence as they prepare for the transition to high school.

   

  A defining tradition of the eighth grade year is graduation, where each student reflects on their educational journey and shares what their time at Pen Ryn has meant to them. These speeches celebrate growth, achievement, and the school’s commitment to helping each student reach their full potential.

   

  Eighth grade is a year of transition, leadership, and preparation for high school, as students leave Pen Ryn with confidence, independence, and a strong academic foundation.
