  Reading

   

  In fifth grade, students engage in a rigorous literacy program using HMH Into Reading that strengthens reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills across a wide range of genres. Students are exposed to high-quality literature and informational texts that challenge them to think critically and communicate effectively.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Read and analyze complex literary and informational texts
  • Use close reading strategies to deepen understanding
  • Make predictions, inferences, and draw conclusions
  • Cite text evidence to support ideas and responses
  • Develop vocabulary through authentic reading experiences
  • Participate in small group discussions and collaborative conversations
  • Strengthen speaking skills through presentations and oral responses

  Writing

   

  Fifth grade writers develop flexibility and independence as they learn to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Writing instruction emphasizes structure, clarity, and voice while reinforcing grammar, spelling, and conventions.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Write personal narratives with strong voice and detail
  • Compose research-based argumentative essays
  • Create research reports using credible sources and evidence
  • Develop fiction writing with plot, characters, and setting
  • Use the writing process: plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish
  • Use technology to support editing, collaboration, and publishing
  • Strengthen grammar, spelling, and writing conventions
  • Develop fluent cursive handwriting and apply it in daily writing tasks

  Fifth grade mathematics builds upon foundational skills and prepares students for middle school-level thinking. Students strengthen their understanding of number systems while 

   

  Grade 5 On-Level Math

   

  Students in the on-level program focus on strengthening core mathematical concepts, building fluency, and applying problem-solving strategies to real-world situations.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Strengthen multiplication and division fluency with multi-digit numbers
  • Deepen understanding of fractions and fraction operations
  • Develop fluency with decimals and place value relationships
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals
  • Solve multi-step real-world problems using a variety of strategies
  • Strengthen estimation and mental math strategies
  • Apply mathematical reasoning to explain and justify solutions

  Honors Math (Big Ideas Math – Advanced 1)

  Students in the Honors Math program engage in an accelerated curriculum that extends and deepens grade-level concepts with increased rigor, complexity, and problem-solving expectations. Emphasis is placed on higher-level reasoning, multiple solution strategies, and mathematical justification.

   

  Students in this course:

   

  • Master and extend multi-digit multiplication and division strategies
  • Explore fractions and decimals with increased depth and complexity
  • Solve advanced multi-step and multi-concept word problems
  • Strengthen algebraic reasoning through patterns, expressions, and relationships
  • Apply advanced problem-solving strategies in real-world contexts
  • Use precise mathematical language to explain and justify solutions
  • Work with measurement, volume, and geometry at an accelerated pace

• Science

  Fifth grade science builds inquiry, experimentation, and analytical thinking through hands-on exploration and research-based learning. Students connect scientific concepts to real-world phenomena and learn to support conclusions with evidence.

   

  Students explore:

   

  • Circulatory and respiratory systems through research, models, and investigations
  • Sound and light through hands-on experiments
  • Ecology and human impact on the environment
  • Cells and the classification of living organisms into kingdoms
  • Weather systems, monitoring, and prediction
  • Introduction to the periodic table and basic elements
  • Physical and chemical changes in matter

   

  Students develop scientific thinking skills through observation, experimentation, discussion, and written explanations.

• Social Studies

  Fifth grade social studies curriculum expands students’ understanding of world geography, cultures, and global connections. Through inquiry, informational text, and project-based learning, students develop critical thinking skills and a deeper awareness of how people and places are interconnected.

   

  Students learn to:

   

  • Understand the world in spatial terms using maps, globes, and geographic tools
  • Identify and analyze places and regions around the world
  • Study physical geography, including landforms, climate, and ecosystems
  • Explore population geography and how and why populations change and move
  • Examine Africa and the Americas through geography, culture, and history
  • Use informational texts and current events to support understanding
  • Develop research skills using credible sources and digital tools
  • Write and present speeches and projects from historical perspectives

   

  Students build global awareness while strengthening their ability to read, analyze, and communicate information effectively.

• Culminating Experiences

  Fifth grade is an exciting year filled with new privileges, responsibilities, and memorable experiences that help prepare students for middle school. Students participate in a variety of academic and community-building events, including the Upper Grades Halloween Sleepover. This highly anticipated event includes a parent- and alumni-created haunted house, a movie, fun evening activities, and time for students to relax and socialize with friends in a safe and supervised setting.

   

  Other experiences include Game-a-Palooza, a signature fifth grade project where students design and create their own original board games. Students use the Innovation Lab, including 3D printers, to bring their ideas to life and write clear, step-by-step directions so others can play their games. This hands-on project integrates creativity, design thinking, collaboration, and communication skills.

   

  Additional experiences include Honor Roll celebrations, school dances, progress monitoring reports, and Discovery classes that provide enrichment and exploration opportunities.

   

  Fifth grade is a year of growth, independence, and transition. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, collaborate with others, and embrace new challenges as they prepare for middle school success.
